Why Try Psychotherapy?
Here is my view of psychotherapy: an individual, possibly very successful in life or in some spheres of life, recognizes certain barriers within the self that make it difficult to achieve a greater happiness and satisfaction with his or her place in the world. This individual seeks out psychotherapy, not necessarily to cure a disorder, but rather to gain greater awareness of what the barriers are and to work on solutions for how to transcend.
Common fears of individuals coming to psychotherapy are that engaging in this process somehow means that they are weak, defective, or self-indulgent. I do not think this is true at all. These fears are the unfortunate result of an outmoded vision of therapy as appropriate only for the deeply disturbed, a vision which—as society and the media catch up with current psychotherapeutic practice—is happily changing. Therapy can be effective for anyone who is yearning to unlock more of his or her resources and to gain greater clarity in moving forward in life.
