College and Graduate Student Issues
Going to school involves an intense environment full of demands, destabilizing shifts in worldview that come from taking in new knowledge, competition, struggles with new modes of performance, and the anxieties that accompany a radical change of life. Students out on their own for the first time have to contend with leaving home even as they’re plunged into these challenges. For many returning students, there is the additional stress of feeling condescended toward because their maturity and background is not always acknowledged. I have worked with students from many walks of life at the California College of the Arts (CCA) and currently at Mills College, and I am intimately familiar with many of the psychological struggles of a student population. I particularly enjoy work with students as they are in an environment and a position where the focus is growth—though there are a lot of pressures, there is also a lot of opportunity to find one’s deepest talents and truest direction.
